“Just use a phone photo for LinkedIn” is common advice, and it’s not wrong for a quick placeholder — but there’s a real difference between a casual photo and a professional corporate headshot, and it shows.
A phone photo depends entirely on whatever light happens to be available. A professional session uses controlled lighting that flatters consistently, and — for a team — produces a matching set of headshots rather than a mismatched collection from different phones, rooms, and days.
A professional headshot is a small, low-effort signal that someone takes their presentation seriously — on LinkedIn, a company site, or a press kit. It doesn’t need to look stiff or corporate-generic; the goal is a natural, relaxed expression captured with a polished finish.
A headshot that’s five-plus years old, or from a noticeably different stage of life, is worth refreshing. As a rule of thumb: if a colleague wouldn’t immediately recognise you from it in person, it’s time.
